The 2017 Fund for Green-Wood
Dear Friend of Green-Wood,
Memory can be fleeting. Moments, hours, days – even entire lives – can pass by without record. This is why remembrance is such an essential and sacred act.
For you and for future generations, Green-Wood remembers.
Green-Wood remembers the importance of an ever-present connection to nature. It was true in the 1800s and it’s still true today, especially for us city dwellers. We need this green oasis. Our expert crew of horticulturists, arborists and landscapers work every day to preserve this rolling landscape that was formed by retreating glaciers almost 20,000 years ago. With over 7,000 majestic trees, four ponds, countless flowering plants, 163 species of birds, and now 16 beehives, these 478 acres are a tranquil retreat for us all.
Green-Wood remembers lives. With extensive archival records dating back to 1838, literally every one of the hundreds of thousands of people interred here has accompanying records in our archives. In addition, our growing collection of photographs, objects, documents, books and artworks help put together a rich picture of the endeavors and accomplishments of many of our “permanent residents.” We are working now to preserve them, digitize them and make them accessible to historians and researchers of all kinds.
Green-Wood remembers how great art can lift the soul. There’s a reason why there’s such beautiful sculpture and grand architecture on our grounds. It transcends time, summons emotions, and activates the senses. And it’s presented in this beautiful outdoor setting, the experience is exceptionally moving. Our Manager of Preservation and Restoration and her team work to conserve our sculpture and historic structures every day. With thousands of stones, sculptures and mausoleums here, their work is never ending.
I’m writing today to ask for your continued support of our work. Every year, your tax-deductible contribution to the Green-Wood Historic Fund supports this multifaceted and purposeful act of remembrance that is our duty and our honor to perform.
You can help us continue to steward this beautiful historic cemetery. Your partnership and your commitment will enable to us to honor our mission to ensure that Green-Wood is here for many generations to come.
